Pan Long Tiandi: Choosing Adaptive Re-use over Strict Historic Preservation

When we look at the most beautiful neighborhoods in the cities, towns and villages of the world, we€ are always impressed by the feeling that they are somehow organic in nature. Everythingσ seems to fit together, defined by the narrow streets, alleys, cou‍rtyards and gardens. It’s a sensation that cannot be conveyed b"y the architecture or style of a single building.

For decades, there has been an imbalance between urban redevelopment and histor≤ic preservation in China.  Pan Long Tiandi will Ωhelp change this imbalance. Located in Qingpu near Shanghai, Pan Long’s core area is composed of the cross waters of the east-west flowing Panglong City River anεd the north-south flowing Panglong City River bran↓ch stream and was once known as the ancient town of Panlong (also known as Pa nlong Town).  In the first year of Qing Guangxu &quot; Panlong Town", was located on the eastern border of Qing Yi and was characte‍rized by curved water, streams, bridges and ‘singing fish’. The town was built in the early Qing Dy•nasty and has developed into a perpendicular east-west streetλ where inhabitants once engaged in farming and weaving. It was one o♥f the main market towns that delivered goods to Shanghai.

Known for its densely-settled alleys, abutting courtyardλs and brick and stone exterior with white walls, Pan Long Tiandi is a♥lready celebrated by the public and will continue to influencπed the way real estate developers and government officials v₽iew old neighborhoods and buildings and China’s continued movement towards inner✘-city preservation.
